The Master of Arts in Ethnic Studies program aims to deepen students' awareness and comprehension of the lived realities of racial and ethnic minority groups. This graduate program equips participants with analytical methods to examine both historical and modern societal challenges tied to these experiences, while cultivating skills to systematically evaluate, design, and implement policy solutions. While maintaining its core emphasis on Asian American, African American, Latinx, and Indigenous communities, the curriculum has expanded to incorporate interdisciplinary approaches including mixed-race scholarship, queer theory, migration studies, colonial critique, race theory frameworks, multiracial community experiences, resistance methodologies, and activist movements.
This graduate degree prepares students for doctoral studies or professional careers in education, research, and leadership across public and private institutions. The program critically examines theoretical frameworks from multiple academic disciplines, employing contemporary analytical lenses like cultural studies, postcolonial theory, and intersectional feminist perspectives in teaching, research, and community work. Students are actively encouraged to combine academic inquiry with grassroots involvement in the diverse Bay Area communities.
The Ethnic Studies MA program offers an interdisciplinary platform for graduate research that fosters scholarly excellence while maintaining a strong dedication to equity work through both academic rigor and community partnerships.
