The Comparative Literature PhD program enables students to engage in in-depth exploration of global literary traditions across national and language boundaries, gain expertise in literary theory and cross-disciplinary approaches, and attain fluency in two foreign languages (beyond their mother tongue). Combining language mastery, academic rigor, and teaching preparation, this doctoral curriculum equips graduates with the qualifications for faculty positions in both national literature programs and comparative fields like world literature, English, Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, or International Studies. Additionally, alumni find success in diverse professions valuing multilingual skills and cross-cultural understanding, including archival science, global media, editorial work, corporate sectors, legal practice, foreign relations, and humanitarian institutions.
Applicants to the M.A./Ph.D. program will normally have completed an undergraduate major in comparative literature or a related field.
