The Department of Chicana/o Studies offers an interdisciplinary platform for examining social justice through diverse methodologies, focusing on Chicana/o/x, Latina/o/x, and Indigenous cultures, communities, and lived experiences. Established to address the demand for critically trained educators, legal professionals, policymakers, and activists in social and environmental justice organizations, the department has empowered students to become community advocates for over five decades. Pioneering the nation's first Chicano/a Studies doctoral program, we remain at the forefront of the field, with faculty conducting groundbreaking research and new Ph.D. graduates joining academic institutions.
Our undergraduate program in Chicana and Chicano Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the diverse historical, political, social, and cultural dimensions of the Chicano/a experience. The curriculum integrates critical perspectives from established disciplines with emerging frameworks in gender, ethnic, sexuality, border, and global studies. By promoting cross-disciplinary exploration and innovative methodological combinations, Chicana and Chicano Studies presents a distinctive approach to scholarly investigation that challenges conventional academic boundaries.
