Classics explores the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome in their entirety: their languages (Greek and Latin), literary works and myths, historical events, philosophical ideas, and artistic/archaeological remains. This field connects us to our origins while illuminating contemporary society. Modern concepts like citizenship, migration, democratic systems, social movements, aesthetics, and relationships all trace back to ancient traditions and societal structures.
As an interdisciplinary field, Classics at UCSB offers an engaging, intellectually stimulating education that develops valuable professional abilities. The study of ancient languages adds exceptional depth to humanities training. Alumni pursue diverse careers as archivists, legal professionals, policy advocates, media specialists, educators, performers, and business analysts. Their expertise in linguistic analysis, problem-solving, and effective communication proves valuable across sectors including public relations, cultural institutions, corporate environments, and technology fields.
The Classics program features intimate courses taught by experienced professors, appealing to dedicated scholars. The department provides three specialized tracks (detailed below) to accommodate varied academic interests. Students pursuing dual degrees often thrive in our program, with law and medical schools particularly recognizing the merit of combining Classics with another discipline. Our supportive faculty maintains close mentorship relationships with students throughout their academic journey.
