The Master of Arts in Anthropology with a specialization in Integrative Anthropological Sciences (IAS) is designed as a stepping stone toward doctoral studies, requiring applicants to apply for both programs simultaneously. The graduate program does not accept students seeking solely an M.A. with an IAS specialization. Anthropology encompasses the comprehensive examination of humanity across biological, sociocultural, and historical dimensions. Many UCSB undergraduates choose anthropology as their major to gain a well-rounded liberal arts education, regardless of their career aspirations. Nevertheless, the program's curriculum also thoroughly prepares students pursuing professional paths in the field.
The anthropology major serves three primary purposes: (1) equipping students for graduate studies and professional anthropology careers, (2) preparing students for roles in secondary education or social work, and (3) offering a behavioral studies foundation for students seeking broad knowledge in either biological or social sciences.
