The music theory program at UC Santa Barbara offers a foundational curriculum focused on tonal and contemporary music analysis, alongside diverse seminar options. These seminars cover both musicological and theoretical subjects. Our graduates have achieved global recognition, with alumni holding teaching positions across educational institutions, earning acclaim as published scholars, award-winning composers, and creators for television and film. They also lead orchestras, opera companies, and choruses, perform as soloists with premier ensembles, and sing with opera companies internationally.
The department requires completion of a Master of Arts degree in music from UCSB or a degree based on equivalent training. Students with a master of arts from another institution will take at least two additional years of graduate coursework for the doctor of philosophy.
