The UCSB graduate program in American history provides diverse, in-depth reading and research seminar opportunities. The curriculum spans conventional historical periods, with particular emphasis on contemporary U.S. history (post-Civil War era to present). The program also features interdisciplinary strengths that transcend traditional timeframes, including gender studies, racial and ethnic studies (encompassing Native American, African American, Asian American and Chicano history), political economy, and policy history. Faculty actively contribute to the department's comparative research clusters, such as gender studies, Cold War studies, and the collaborative UCSB/California State Public History initiative. Related academic departments - including Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Chicano Studies, Religious Studies, and Women's Studies - feature faculty with complementary expertise. First-year U.S. history graduate students must complete the 292 course sequence, which offers a comprehensive survey of American historiography while highlighting UCSB's distinctive academic strengths.
