The Sociology Department boasts more than 1,600 undergraduate students, ranking among the nation's largest programs. Recognized for excellence in gender studies, feminist theory, cultural sociology, race and ethnic relations, Latinx studies, globalization impacts, social activism, conversational analysis, and network theory, the department stands at the forefront of sociological research. It's celebrated for pioneering studies, diverse viewpoints, encouragement of new research fields, and creative disciplinary approaches. Scholars investigate subjects spanning from gender norms and sexual orientation in daily experiences to housing policy outcomes, AIDS-related social impacts, and digital technology's societal influence. Research extends to urban development economics, Chicanx family structures, and political histories of developing nations. As a Sociology student, you'll develop multifaceted insights into how social systems influence people and organizations. Our curriculum covers fundamental sociological domains like Cultural Studies, Gender & Sexuality, Racial & Ethnic Relations, and Social Dynamics. The major's structure ensures comprehensive training in sociological theories and research methods, equipping students for hands-on investigation. Beyond forming a strong liberal arts foundation, this program readies students for advanced sociological studies or careers in law, administration, urban design, criminal justice, media, education, social services, and related fields.
You are considered a freshman applicant if you have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university. 
Earn a weighted 3.0 minimum GPA (3.4 for nonresidents) in A-G courses. Grades from A-G subjects in the 10th-11th grades (including summer work) are used to calculate the UC GPA.
English Language Proficiency
The minimum accepted score for admission consideration for the TOEFL is 80 or better on the Internet-based test.
The minimum accepted score for the IELTS is 6.5 or better band score (academic modules).
