The Medieval Studies program offers an interdisciplinary approach to examining European and Middle Eastern cultures during the Middle Ages through multiple academic lenses including history, literature, religion, performing arts, visual arts, and music. Students can tailor their studies by focusing primarily on one or two disciplines while incorporating others, or they can create a more evenly distributed curriculum across several fields. To strengthen interdisciplinary connections, the program features specially designed cross-listed courses that facilitate engagement with medieval scholars both within UCSB and the broader academic community. Annually, one upper-division course from another department that meets the major's requirements will be designated as Medieval Studies 100 (A-Z). These courses include guest lectures by faculty from different UCSB departments and provide students with access to a specialized mini-conference featuring visiting scholars presenting research related to the course topic.
