The five-year combined Bachelor's/Master's program caters to UCSB undergraduates majoring in Chinese or Japanese who aim to continue their education at the graduate level. This integrated pathway enables students to simultaneously earn a Bachelor's degree in Chinese or Japanese alongside a Master's in East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies. While these degrees are typically pursued separately (four years for the B.A. and two for the M.A.), this accelerated program lets students enhance their language proficiency and deepen their understanding of Chinese or Japanese studies through graduate-level courses in their chosen specialization areas, guided by departmental faculty. Participation in a study abroad program in their focus country is mandatory during the third year.
