The Bachelor of Arts in Earth Science offers comparable coursework to the Bachelor of Science programs while providing greater flexibility in advanced Earth Science classes and a reduced credit requirement. B.A. candidates must complete identical foundational courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and introductory Earth Science, along with four key upper-level classes covering field techniques (104A), planetary climate systems (105), mineral studies (114), and data interpretation (134). The curriculum also includes specialized courses in optical mineral analysis (115), sedimentary processes (122), plus 18 elective units from upper-division Earth Science offerings. While students are typically advised to select a specialized B.S. track, the B.A. alternative suits those seeking customizable degree paths or interdisciplinary combinations.
UCSB's Earth Science Department engages in extensive field research across diverse environments - from the Himalayan summits to Antarctic wilderness and unexplored ocean trenches. Both graduate and undergraduate students actively contribute to groundbreaking explorations of uncharted territories. Under the guidance of an accomplished faculty (featuring National Academy of Sciences members and UCSB teaching award recipients), Earth Science students witness scientific breakthroughs firsthand while understanding their role in Earth's ongoing geological narrative. The program equips learners with versatile competencies in spatial analysis, data visualization, computational methods, and critical thinking - preparing them for professional opportunities across private enterprises, government agencies, educational institutions, research organizations, and industrial sectors.
