Due to El Paso's distinctive location where the Franklin Mountains converge with the Chihuahuan Desert, geology became UTEP's founding academic department in 1914. Building on this legacy, UTEP's Geological Sciences has grown into a nationally acclaimed research initiative, supported by organizations like the National Science Foundation, U.S. Geological Survey, NASA, Department of Energy, and leading energy companies. The Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences provides Bachelor of Science degrees in Geological Sciences and Environmental Sciences, collaborating with faculty from Biological Science and Chemistry departments.
