Anthropology examines humanity from comprehensive perspectives: biological, sociocultural, and historical. Many UCSB undergraduates choose this major for the well-rounded liberal arts education it provides, regardless of whether they plan to become professional anthropologists. The program also thoroughly prepares students pursuing careers in the field.
The anthropology major has three primary objectives: (1) equipping students for graduate studies in anthropology, (2) preparing students for careers in secondary education or social services, and (3) offering behavioral science foundations for students seeking broad knowledge in biological or social sciences.
Those fascinated by contemporary social and cultural groups typically focus on cultural anthropology. Students drawn to human biology, ecological adaptations, and evolutionary processes often specialize in biological anthropology. Archaeology appeals to those interested in studying past human societies through both cultural and biological lenses. For students wanting a comprehensive approach, the general major without specialization is available.
