Anthropology examines humanity from multiple perspectives: biological, sociocultural, and historical. Many UCSB undergraduates choose this major for its comprehensive liberal arts foundation, regardless of whether they plan to become professional anthropologists. The program also thoroughly prepares students pursuing professional careers in the field.
The anthropology major serves three primary purposes: (1) equipping students for graduate studies in anthropology, (2) preparing students for careers in secondary education or social services, and (3) offering behavioral science foundations for students seeking broad knowledge in biological or social sciences.
Those fascinated by contemporary societies often focus on cultural anthropology. Students drawn to human biology and evolutionary adaptations typically select biological anthropology. Archaeology appeals to those interested in studying ancient civilizations through both cultural and biological lenses. For a well-rounded approach, students may opt for the general major without specialization.
