The Computer Music Program focuses on exploring innovative approaches to electronic music creation and live performance, driven by a dynamic schedule of concerts featuring original works from students, instructors, and guest artists. The program promotes interdisciplinary collaboration with other academic tracks: Composition, Performance, and Integrative Studies. Students are encouraged to examine and perform existing electronic music pieces while also composing new works incorporating electronic elements.
The foundational computer music coursework in the first year revolves around a comprehensive yearlong core class that introduces key concepts in the field. This curriculum is organized into three main segments (audio signal processing, composition algorithms, and music cognition).
During their second year, students pursue specialized study under faculty guidance to advance their expertise in chosen focus areas. For instance, those concentrating on signal processing may investigate digital audio analysis and reconstruction methods, referencing contemporary research. After completing a substantial portion of these specialized courses, students transition to preparing for their qualifying exams, and upon passing, commence their doctoral thesis work.
