The field of Geosciences focuses on utilizing core concepts from geology, geochemistry, cosmochemistry, and geophysics to address challenges in Earth's marine and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as on other celestial bodies. Graduate candidates regularly join research voyages at sea and field expeditions on land, with numerous doctoral dissertations emerging from these hands-on experiences. Those accepted into the Geosciences of the Earth, Oceans, and Planets (GEO) program receive a faculty advisor who leads their three-member advisory committee. Depending on each student's academic focus and their advisor's primary specialization, they are placed into a specific study track upon enrollment. While students have flexibility to switch between curricular groups during the academic year, they must ultimately select which departmental examination they will complete.
