The UC San Diego Literature Department stands out both in its design and organization by merging all literary disciplines into one unified department. This allows students to focus on specific language or national literatures while encouraging cross-cultural literary discussions. The department encompasses both undergraduate and graduate programs in creative writing practice and theory. It serves as a hub for writers, educators, researchers, and students from diverse linguistic and literary backgrounds, connected through their shared academic pursuits. This structure introduces a comparative dimension to all degree programs, including Bachelor of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Candidate in Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy. Proficiency in a second language is mandatory for all literature students. The curriculum includes not only literature courses but also literary theory, and frequently collaborates with other departments to explore connections between literature and fields like philosophy, visual arts, music, sociology, history, psychology, linguistics, and communication. With special approval, undergraduates can enroll in graduate-level courses for credit, and graduate students may likewise take undergraduate courses for credit.
