Advancements in technology and the push toward cultural and economic globalization are bringing societies closer together. Yet, divisions rooted in ethnicity, religion, and economics persist, sparking conflicts both within and between communities. This growing interconnectedness, alongside enduring divisions, highlights the need for deeper insights into diverse cultures and societal structures. Societies cannot be analyzed in isolation or at a single moment—they are influenced by global and regional contexts, including political, military, economic, and cultural dynamics, as well as historical legacies. In turn, individuals and societies reshape these environments by reinterpreting their histories. The International Studies Program takes a multidisciplinary approach, leveraging UC San Diego's expertise in international specializations. Political science contributes through its well-established fields of international relations and comparative politics. Economics provides essential theories and methods for navigating a globalized world. Sociology, business, and anthropology focus on comparing societies, economies, markets, and cultures. Literature and linguistics explore languages and traditions beyond English-speaking communities, while area studies programs deliver in-depth knowledge of specific countries and regions.
