The German studies program provides interdisciplinary major and minor options for students with diverse academic interests in German-speaking cultures. Working closely with the program director and undergraduate advisor, students create personalized study plans by selecting from core courses across multiple departments including History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, and Theatre and Dance. Additional relevant courses from other departments may be included when directly related to German studies. Prospective majors or minors should meet with a German studies faculty member at the earliest opportunity.
Certain upper-division courses require German language proficiency (equivalent to two years of university-level instruction). Students are encouraged to achieve this language competency early in their academic journey.
