Welcome to the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology at UC Riverside. Our mission focuses on researching the fundamental biology of plant pathogens and microorganisms, creating strategies to control microbial diseases in plants and other lifeforms, delivering excellent education to students, and serving as a trusted resource for plant disease and microbiology expertise globally.
Our department traces its origins to the Citrus Experiment Station founded in Riverside in 1905. While maintaining expertise in citrus disease research, we've broadened our scope to encompass diverse plant diseases and multiple microbiology specialties. Our faculty includes specialists in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, ecology, evolutionary biology, and conventional disease management. Many collaborate closely with industry professionals, advisors, and policymakers across California and internationally. These connections support applied research to detect emerging and prevalent plant diseases while developing ecological and epidemiological solutions. The self-funded Master's program typically requires two years, offering both thesis and non-thesis (comprehensive exam) options. Non-thesis students complete at least 36 upper-division and graduate units, including 18 graduate-level Plant Pathology courses, followed by a final oral examination administered by a faculty committee.
