The Master of Science in Plant Pathology program offers education in microbial sciences through foundational and specialized courses, along with comprehensive research opportunities focusing on molecular, genetic, genomic, or ecological studies of microbes. This includes plant-associated and free-living fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Incoming MS candidates can explore two different laboratories during rotations, gaining exposure to diverse scientific approaches and methodologies. After selecting a primary lab and faculty advisor, students immerse themselves in the lab's research focus by engaging in its full range of activities. Under their advisor's mentorship, they design and conduct original research, presenting their findings in a Master's Thesis and possibly a peer-reviewed publication.
Required coursework is streamlined, incorporating fundamental plant science to build a strong understanding of plant-microbe interactions. Students tailor their electives, chosen with faculty guidance, to align with their specific interests in plant-microbe research.
Graduates of the Plant Pathology MS program are equipped for professional roles in government agencies, private industry, and academia, where expertise in microbial science and research methodologies is essential.
Plants are vital to all terrestrial life. Our program applies scientific inquiry to address critical challenges, from global food security to ecological preservation. Whether investigating microbial relationships, breeding resilient crops, or advancing biofuel technologies, our research delivers tangible benefits. Students gain practical experience through cutting-edge facilities such as the Controlled Environment Agricultural Center (CEAC) and the University of Arizona Herbarium, enriching their academic journey with hands-on learning.
