The Department of Art History at UC Riverside provides graduate programs leading to MA and PhD degrees, specializing in art and architectural history from the early modern era through contemporary times.
This interdisciplinary program covers art and architectural history spanning the Middle Ages to today, with particular strengths in photography, sculpture, and architectural studies. It emphasizes cultural intersections, interdisciplinary dialogue, and key historical developments from the Renaissance onward across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Coursework is organized into three primary chronological divisions: pre-modern, early-modern, and modern/contemporary. Students explore diverse historical periods and cultural traditions beyond their specialization. The program encourages cross-departmental collaboration with units like Comparative Literature, English, Dance, History, Anthropology, Media Studies, and Religious Studies.
Students benefit from UC system resources and Southern California's vibrant arts community. The department maintains strong ties with Los Angeles museums, including the UCR/California Museum of Photography with its significant photographic collections. The region offers unparalleled access to global art spanning ancient to contemporary periods and serves as a hub for architectural innovation, with numerous 20th-century landmarks nearby. Los Angeles continues to nurture both established and emerging artists.
The MA program equips graduates for museum careers, teaching positions, or doctoral studies.
Designed as a two-year program, students typically complete degree requirements within six quarters. The first year focuses on coursework exploring diverse art historical methodologies, while the second emphasizes thesis development under faculty guidance. Students may pursue museum internships for academic credit. The culminating 60-80 page thesis demonstrates independent research integrating art historical analysis with theoretical frameworks. While primarily working with Art History faculty, students may collaborate with scholars in related fields like Anthropology or Media Studies depending on their research focus.
