The Department of Hispanic Studies provides a Ph.D. program in Spanish to prepare graduates for scholarly and teaching careers in academia. Our curriculum focuses on rigorous graduate-level coursework and original research, leading to the completion of a doctoral dissertation. The program ensures comprehensive knowledge in each student's specialization while maintaining breadth across the wider discipline of Hispanic Studies. Applicants with a UCR M.A. must receive faculty approval to pursue the Ph.D. Degree requirements. A minimum of 24 post-M.A. units is required, though most doctoral candidates benefit from exceeding this baseline. With advisor approval, students may include relevant courses from other departments in their program. The standard completion time for the Ph.D. after obtaining an M.A. is nine quarters, while students entering with a B.A. typically finish in 15 quarters.
