The Department of Sociology provides a focused program in Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies. This concentration examines the roots, forms, impacts, and regulation of criminal behavior, covering offenses from juvenile delinquency and street crime to domestic abuse, corporate misconduct, white-collar offenses, and government-related violations. Studying crime and its prevention demands interdisciplinary investigation. While acknowledging this, the program prioritizes sociological perspectives that explore how structural and cultural elements contribute to criminal behavior, including urban environment changes and the links between racial inequality, poverty, and violent crime. The curriculum also highlights legal theories and their implementation within judicial systems, as well as their interaction with other societal structures. This includes analyzing how these elements define perceptions of criminality and affect legal processes. Foundational research on crime and legal matters forms the core of this program, with equal importance placed on using this knowledge to guide legal reforms and practical applications.
