Microbiology explores microscopic life forms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These tiny organisms have significant impacts on ecosystems and human society, both causing and preventing various illnesses in living beings. They drive essential environmental processes, from enriching soil to breaking down pollutants. Industrially, microbes are crucial for producing foods like bread and cheese, while also providing valuable compounds for biotechnology and medical applications.
The Microbiology program is overseen by the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology, offering both B.S. and B.A. degrees. This major prepares students for diverse postgraduate opportunities, including advanced Microbiology studies or professional programs in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary science, and other healthcare fields. Graduates can pursue technical roles in medicine, agriculture, biotech, environmental science, or forensic science, or opt for science education through teaching certification.
