The Philosophy Department provides diverse undergraduate programs for those pursuing majors or minors in Philosophy or Philosophy/Law and Society. UC Riverside's Philosophy program holds national recognition with a truly pluralistic approach, excelling in analytic philosophy, 19th-20th century European thought, and philosophical history (particularly the 18th-19th centuries).
Consistently ranked among global leaders in Agency Theory (Philosophy of Action) and Continental Philosophy, we also demonstrate expertise in Kantian studies, philosophy of mind/language, epistemology, analytic philosophy history, moral/legal theory, and philosophy of religion. Our department fosters significant cross-pollination between these specialties, with most faculty engaging in multiple research areas.
This unique program allows students to explore both analytic and European philosophical traditions while maintaining robust historical foundations, all within an environment free of rigid disciplinary boundaries.
The Philosophy curriculum immerses students in fundamental debates concerning ethics, epistemology, consciousness, physical reality, scientific inquiry, and linguistic analysis. Students gain comprehensive training in Western philosophical traditions while examining modern analytic and Continental perspectives. The B.A. program effectively prepares graduates for philosophy graduate studies or law school, while also serving as an ideal second major alongside psychology, mathematics, political science, or natural sciences.
