The History Department acknowledges the legacy of racism and violence in our community, particularly targeting Black individuals and other people of color, and commends the courage of UCR students in confronting our faculty. To support our students, communities, and the need for introspection, the History Department is dedicating time to thoughtful reflection and transformation. A detailed action plan outlining specific measures will be shared by the Department.
All Majors are required to collaborate with History Department faculty and staff to create a Major Pathway Plan. This Pathway Plan must receive approval NO LATER THAN two quarters after achieving upper-division status. Reach out to your Academic Advisor for guidance.
To earn recognition for completing the B.A. degree with distinction, students typically enroll in HIST 195A and HIST 195B, the two-quarter Senior Thesis program. Majors who complete HIST 197 followed by a related HIST 199 or 199H, or those who finish HNPG 195 with a thesis approved by the University Honors Program, also qualify. Additionally, a minimum 3.5 GPA in the major upon graduation is required for this distinction.
Lower-division courses completed at other institutions may fulfill lower-division requirements, with up to four advanced placement units from high school also applicable. Students can request to apply up to two relevant upper-division courses (8 units) from other UCR departments toward their upper-division elective requirement. For more information, please speak with the academic advisors.
