Economics examines how societies manage limited resources across consumer, corporate, governmental, and national activities. As a quantitative discipline, modern economic analysis demands strong mathematical and statistical skills. Economics graduates pursue careers in business, law, public service, government agencies, and global affairs, while also preparing for advanced degrees like MBAs, JDs, and economics PhDs.
UCR's Economics Department provides four specialized undergraduate programs.
Both the Economics and Business Economics majors deliver comprehensive training in microeconomic and macroeconomic principles and their real-world applications. While sharing core theoretical foundations, they differ in upper-level coursework - Economics allows more flexibility, whereas Business Economics focuses on practical business applications. Both pathways prepare students for master's-level economics studies and professional economist roles.
Two interdisciplinary options broaden academic perspectives. The Economics, Law and Society major integrates CHASS-wide perspectives, fostering critical analysis of legal systems and social structures. The Economics/Administrative Studies major presents a structured CHASS alternative to traditional business programs, combining economic theory with administrative coursework.
The Economics major specifically equips students with rigorous theoretical training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistical methods, serving both future graduate students and aspiring professional economists.
