Asian American Studies offers essential interdisciplinary insights into the diverse histories of Asian communities in the U.S., including their migration, settlement, and interactions. The Asian American population represents a wide array of diasporic groups, increasingly divided by socioeconomic and regional differences. As U.S. global influence grows, driven by expanding military and economic engagement in the Pacific Rim, Asian American Studies serves a vital function in examining and influencing economic, political, cultural, and international dynamics between Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the U.S.
At UCR, Asian American students make up 41% of the student population. Currently, the program includes two faculty members: Professor Edward Chang (an ethnic studies scholar), Assistant Professor Emily Hue (a cultural theorist specializing in visual culture and performance studies), and Keith Miyake (a critical geographer). The rising Asian student enrollment and the diversity within these communities highlight the need for faculty with expertise in East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander studies.
