The Directing specialization cultivates bold, innovative work in a collaborative and diverse environment, transcending conventional theater boundaries. The program provides a comprehensive curriculum featuring essential studio classes, three production projects, and cross-disciplinary electives. Students are encouraged to pursue holistic development by exploring disciplines beyond theater, taking advantage of UCLA's leading research resources. Teamwork is central: directors collaborate closely with playwrights, designers, and performers. A professional internship, either in Los Angeles or elsewhere in the country, enhances the academic journey.
A notable recent addition is the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Emerging Technologies for Performance, open to all MFA candidates. This intensive program incorporates cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, augmented reality, and real-time rendering into performance art. It not only prepares students for groundbreaking theater work but also creates opportunities in fields like gaming, experiential design, and entertainment environments.
