While the Department provides both M.A. and Ph.D. programs, its primary focus is doctoral studies. Students earn an M.A. in Spanish or Portuguese after completing the initial stage of the Ph.D. curriculum, which specializes in Hispanic Languages and Literatures.
UCLA's Ph.D. program in Hispanic Languages and Literature blends rigorous scholarship with teaching experience and public engagement. The department fosters diverse critical perspectives and promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration, leveraging UCLA's academic resources. Students pursuing Latin American-Iberian or Afro-Luso-Brazilian studies examine literature, culture, film, and theory, building comprehensive knowledge while refining their research focus. The Spanish and Portuguese Linguistics track covers phonetics, phonology, syntax, historical linguistics, and includes psycho- and socio-linguistic investigations.
Beyond Spanish and Portuguese, graduate students can study Basque, Catalan, Quechua, and Nahuatl within the department, plus numerous other languages across UCLA. They engage with interdisciplinary initiatives like Digital Humanities, Urban Humanities, and Experimental Critical Theory, alongside research collectives such as Diversifying the Classics and the Hebrew Aljamiado Research Group. All candidates receive pedagogical training and gain teaching experience in language, literature, and cultural studies, with some earning university-level Distinguished Teaching Awards.
