In 1982, UCLA pioneered the nation's first interdisciplinary Master of Arts program in American Indian Studies. Recognized as one of the top programs in this field, the MA curriculum leverages expertise from various UCLA departments. Students select a specialization while developing research capabilities for original scholarly work. Alumni gain qualifications to teach Native American studies, continue advanced graduate studies, or lead administrative roles in Indigenous programs. Program graduates have excelled as tribal historians, museum professionals, educators, creative artists, documentary filmmakers, tribal leaders, academic researchers, and university faculty. Over 50% of graduates pursue doctoral studies or additional advanced degrees. This MA program collaborates with the renowned American Indian Studies Center, a leading research institution in its field.
An international student whose post-secondary education is completed outside of the U.S. is expected to hold a degree representing completion of at least four years of study with above average scholarship from a university or university-level institution.
IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.
TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test.
