Academic advising begins with the assigned faculty area advisor, who provides guidance throughout each term until students fulfill their coursework obligations. Simultaneously, students select a research director to oversee their dissertation work. The Graduate Study Committee, comprising faculty and staff advisors along with area specialists, conducts quarterly progress reviews for every student. Individual support is available from the faculty graduate advisor, area advisors, and the Director of Graduate Student Services.
Progress Evaluation. After the first and second years, the Graduate Study Committee assesses each student's comprehensive advancement, considering coursework performance, exam results, teaching contributions, and research development. Based on this evaluation, the committee may advise students to either (1) advance to the oral examination phase, (2) transition to the M.S. program, or (3) discontinue their studies.
