The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department conducts studies centered on controlling DNA, proteins, and cells for biotechnological and medical applications. Researchers employ both computational models and laboratory experiments to tackle significant scientific and engineering challenges. Key investigation areas encompass: (1) genomic studies and metabolic pathway engineering, (2) production of natural compounds, (3) development and manufacturing of biological detection systems, (4) engineered biological materials and regenerative medicine, and (5) synthetic biology applications in immune system therapies. Advanced methodologies including high-throughput genetic analysis and nanoscale manufacturing are combined with computational approaches to push boundaries in biological sciences and engineering innovation.

Qualification Requirements

IELTS - 7.0. TOEFL IBT - 87. TOEFL PBT - 560. All Official Transcripts. All required application materials must be received by the application deadline including the online application, most current uploaded unofficial transcripts, test scores and letters of recommendation requests sent to recommenders. There are no exceptions. You are not required to have the official transcripts mailed to department unless requested. The minimum undergraduate GPA requirement for a PhD is 3.5 and MS is 3.2. We require only the Cumulative GPA. – Personal Statement and Statement of Purpose are required and there are no formatting requirements. The Department Supplement is not required. A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA will be required for admission to graduate programs at UCLA.
