The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering became an independent unit in 1984. Our team consists of 34 dedicated full-time professors, each mentoring our 335 graduate students. Every faculty member actively participates in cutting-edge research initiatives, typically supported by external funding, making significant advancements in engineering and scientific fields.
Admission to our department is highly selective. In recent years, successful applicants maintained an average GPA of 3.67/4.00, with GRE scores averaging 79% in Verbal, 92% in Quantitative, and 84% in Analytical sections. (Important: GRE scores are optional for 2023 admissions.)
Prospective students must submit the UCLA Graduate Admission Application, which provides detailed guidelines and additional requirements through its online platform.
Per university policy, applicants may only apply to one program. Carefully select your preferred program before application submission. Note: Individuals holding equivalent MS or PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or closely related disciplines cannot pursue duplicate degrees at the same academic level.
An international student whose post-secondary education is completed outside of the U.S. is expected to hold a degree representing completion of at least four years of study with above average scholarship from a university or university-level institution.
IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.
TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test.
