The Spanish Major and Minor equip students with language fluency and cultural understanding to thrive as global citizens among over 400 million Spanish speakers worldwide. Our curriculum explores the languages, literature, societies, and traditions of Spanish-speaking regions across the globe, examining works from medieval times to contemporary periods across multiple continents - including the Americas, Europe, and Africa. This interdisciplinary program connects Latin American and Iberian studies with diverse academic fields such as anthropology, linguistics, history, urban studies, gender research, and visual arts.
Beyond language acquisition, students pursuing either the Spanish BA or Minor develop essential abilities in analytical reading, academic writing, research methodologies, and critical analysis - skills that complement any additional majors. Alumni apply these competencies in graduate studies and professional fields including education, healthcare, legal practice, commerce, media, international relations, creative arts, and social advocacy.
As a capstone program, the Spanish Major offers seniors the distinctive chance to collaborate with faculty on specialized research projects examining the rich histories and cultures of Spanish-speaking communities.
