The Undergraduate Program in the History Department requires completion of 16 history courses (six lower-division courses as part of the Preparation for the Major, including pre-major requirements, and ten upper-division courses for the Major). Admission to the major is only granted after finishing the history pre-major requirements.

Courses in the History Department span an extraordinary breadth of historical eras and global regions, from antiquity in the Mediterranean to contemporary Los Angeles, from early Chinese dynasties to the modern Caribbean, from colonial America to the Middle East. These courses explore diverse topics such as world and regional histories, gender and sexuality studies, scientific and medical developments, artistic and musical traditions, migration and ethnic studies, social class and cultural movements, as well as conflicts and peacebuilding efforts.
