The UCLA English Department focuses on delivering a comprehensive liberal arts education, equipping students with essential reading, writing, and analytical abilities to thrive in modern society. The department provides diverse courses covering British, American, and Anglophone literary traditions and cultural studies. Home to more than seventy faculty members and a thousand undergraduate majors, it fosters a dynamic environment for scholarly discussion, education, and research. Students meeting specific criteria can pursue a creative writing specialization within the major. Additionally, the department grants a Bachelor of Arts in American Literature and Culture, along with an English Minor option.
To satisfy English major prerequisites, all courses must carry 4 or 5 units and be completed with letter grades.
Seminar courses cannot count toward Historical or Breadth requirements.
While selecting courses for major requirements, students should prioritize those aligning with their academic passions while maintaining a structured approach to literary studies.
