The undergraduate curriculum starts by covering fundamental design components and methods: shape, hue, sketching, typography, animation, and digital interaction. Students also learn about historical contexts and societal concerns. In advanced courses, studio classes examine modern applications of interactive media and emerging trends in visual communication, such as temporal elements, movement, and digital spaces in virtual settings. A mix of theoretical, analytical, and hands-on classes helps students grasp core design concepts. Class sizes are typically limited to 22 students, promoting personal development and building a strong departmental community.
Design Media Arts is a capstone-focused major. Students must undertake an in-depth independent project that involves every stage of the design workflow. Their capstone work showcases skills in research, conceptualization, creative leadership, strategic communication, execution, and evaluation. Capstone classes emphasize career preparation, with final projects featured in the annual spring exhibition for graduating seniors.
