Software engineering involves systematically applying structured, measurable methods to create, operate, and sustain software systems—essentially bringing engineering principles to software development. This multidisciplinary domain connects computer science, engineering, mathematics, and behavioral sciences. UC Irvine's M.S. Software Engineering (MSSE) program emphasizes research and caters to students holding a bachelor's in computer science or related fields, whether they're recent graduates or working professionals. The curriculum strengthens expertise in software engineering, especially for those wanting advanced knowledge of methodologies, technologies, and practices for building reliable, complex software solutions. Although not every M.S. graduate pursues a Ph.D., the program's research-intensive nature provides excellent preparation for doctoral studies, such as our Ph.D. in Software Engineering.
