The Computer Science program provides a comprehensive and adaptable curriculum, equipping students with the foundation for advanced studies across all areas of computer science. This discipline focuses on creating, evaluating, and executing computer systems while exploring computational applications in nearly every academic field and daily life. Computer systems vary from small embedded devices to global networks like the internet. Computer science research combines mathematical theory, practical experiments, and developing prototype systems. Computer vision research bridges vision science, AI, computer graphics, and image processing. At UCI, we emphasize both theoretical foundations and practical implementations. A key area of study involves biological vision systems, covering all levels of visual processing. Our research tackles core perceptual challenges such as edge detection, pattern organization, appearance and shape modeling, and object recognition. The ultimate goal is uncovering the computational processes and principles underlying human visual perception.
