The Computer Science program provides a comprehensive and adaptable curriculum, equipping students with the foundation for advanced studies across all areas of computer science. This discipline focuses on creating, evaluating, and executing computer systems, along with applying computational methods to nearly every academic field and real-world application. Computer systems vary from miniature embedded devices to the entire internet infrastructure. Computer science research combines mathematical theory, practical experimentation, and system prototyping. Computational methods are proving invaluable for solving critical challenges in biology and medicine. Global initiatives to build databases containing protein structures, DNA sequences, metabolic pathways, pharmaceutical data, and patient records have opened new possibilities for intelligent systems. At UCI, active research in bio/medical informatics encompasses: Healthcare Information Retrieval, Guideline Representation for Medical Practices, Biomedical Data Analysis, Medical Simulations, Gene Regulation Analysis, Clinical Data Mining, Biological Computing, Bioinformatics, and Statistical Modeling.
