Scenic Design is a journey of exploration. Designers investigate their creative concepts to determine what will most effectively illuminate, enhance, and reinterpret the narrative. The final design emerges from collective decisions by the designer, director, and performers that shape the theatrical universe. Rather than evaluating each choice in isolation, the designer must consider how they combine to form a cohesive vision—a meaningful framework that resonates with audiences. UCIrvine's scenic design program focuses on cultivating a thorough exploratory process while nurturing perceptive, cooperative, and insightful theater practitioners.

Exceptional design always starts with a careful analysis of the script. The concept evolves through meaningful discussions with collaborators and constructive critique of their contributions. As the design takes form, the Designer must refine concepts to craft the most dynamic stage production possible. Our goal is to develop designers who are fundamentally skilled narrators. We strongly believe this foundation also equips students with valuable skills for adjacent industries including television, film, and commercial design.
