Political psychology has become a significant branch within political science and a key area of psychological research. This expansion is evident through the creation of dedicated organizations like the International Society of Political Psychology, specialized sections within major academic associations, and the launch of prominent journals focused on political psychology across the US and Europe.
At UC Irvine, the Political Psychology program stands among several established US initiatives over the past 15 years. Building on the School of Social Sciences' interdisciplinary approach, it features collaboration with renowned faculty from political science, psychology, critical theory, and medicine. The UC Irvine program distinguishes itself in several ways:
It stresses integrating thorough empirical studies with deeper questions from normative and analytical political theory.Students must complete extensive coursework in both political science and psychology. It embraces diverse research techniques such as open-ended interviews, semi-structured interviews, surveys, and behavioral observations, along with various research frameworks including case studies, sample surveys, and experiments. The program organizes the Southern California Political Psychology Workshop, a biannual event gathering faculty and graduate students from across California for day-long conferences on campus.Additionally, through UCI's Interdisciplinary Center for the Scientific Study of Ethics and Morality, the program maintains formal ties with the Caucus of Concerned Scholars: Committee on Ethics and Morality of the International Society of Political Psychology.
