The History Graduate Program at UCI provides students with a vibrant intellectual environment characterized by cross-disciplinary discussions between faculty and students, focusing on key research areas including: Transnational, colonial, and imperial studies; Global History; Science, technology, medicine, and environmental histories; Gender and sexuality studies; and Religious history. Through graduate seminars, students from diverse geographical and historical specializations engage in a unique educational approach that blends theoretical rigor with in-depth analysis of archival materials, texts, interviews, and artifacts. The UCI History Department maintains an ideal balance—small enough for personalized guidance yet robust enough to foster a dynamic research culture. Students benefit from the department's strong focus on public-facing writing, history education initiatives like the UC Irvine History Project (which connects with K-12 programs), and emerging strengths in digital humanities. Additionally, students can expand their academic perspectives through interdisciplinary opportunities in Critical Theory, East Asian Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies. With its intentionally limited cohort size, the program facilitates meaningful faculty-student collaboration, enabling customized academic paths aligned with each student's aspirations.
