The Chemistry Department provides both M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. The Ph.D. is awarded based on demonstrating comprehensive understanding of contemporary chemistry principles and the capability to conduct autonomous research, evidenced by an approved doctoral thesis. For the M.S., students can choose between submitting a Master's thesis (Plan I) or completing designated graduate courses along with an oral comprehensive exam (Plan II). Note that a Master's degree isn't required for Ph.D. program admission. At UCI, chemistry education scholars investigate learning processes across educational levels, examining conceptual challenges and developing improved teaching methods. This work involves partnerships with K-12 educators and higher education faculty.
