The School of Biological Sciences provides Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs, with primary focus on doctoral studies at the graduate level. While students typically specialize within a specific department, all graduate students have access to resources and courses across all Biological Sciences departments. Cross-disciplinary learning and research initiatives are strongly supported.
A minimum B average must be sustained throughout the program. Typically, master's degrees require two years to complete, while doctoral programs take five years. Enrollment in the Ph.D. program does not require prior completion of a master's degree.
Academic planning occurs through collaboration with either a graduate advisor or faculty committee, with the flexibility to change advisors as student needs evolve. With approval from the Graduate Studies dean and acceptance into another program, students may transfer within the School. Regular consultation with faculty regarding research and academic goals is recommended.
All Ph.D. candidates must complete at least two quarters as 50% teaching assistants, supervised by lab coordinators or faculty. Senior graduate students may collaborate with faculty on teaching program development. Teaching requirements differ by department in both scope and format.
All applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements:
