In the 21st century, scientists across disciplines—from medicine to global change biology—are increasingly integrating ecological and evolutionary concepts into their work. The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major helps students explore and value the key connections between biological fields. This comprehensive program covers evolutionary biology, ecology, and physiology. Faculty expertise spans diverse areas, such as molecular evolution, population genetics, aging research, conservation, restoration ecology, biogeography, disease evolution, experimental evolution, microbial ecology, behavioral studies, ecophysiology, and more. Graduates will be well-equipped for advanced studies in ecology or evolution, as well as careers in environmental organizations, industry, or professional schools. The Department emphasizes hands-on research as essential to scientific training, requiring majors to complete BIO SCI 199 or BIO SCI 197 under faculty mentorship.
Student must have completed secondary school with excellent grades/marks in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion that enables you to be admitted to a university in your home country and is equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma. If your secondary/high school was completed in a country where English was not the language of instruction, or if you have less than three years of high school curriculum instruction in English in the U.S., you are required to demonstrate English proficiency.
Various examinations and scores may be used to demonstrate proficiency in English: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination: Internet-based test (IBT): score 80 or higher; Score 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); Freshman applicants may complete one UC approved English composition course.
