The Theoretical and Computational Chemistry concentration offers Chemistry majors an intensive curriculum focused on theory and computation. This track demands more mathematics, physics, and computer science coursework than the standard Chemistry major, while making upper-level lab courses optional. Unique among Chemistry specializations, this program requires faculty advisor approval. Students will be guided by a faculty member from the Theoretical and Computational Chemistry group, who will help customize their elective selections.
Chemistry explores the molecular foundations of matter. It underpins nearly every aspect of modern life—from renewable energy and pharmaceuticals to nutrition, cosmetics, environmental systems, human biology, and even emotional responses. UCI's Chemistry Department boasts renowned researchers advancing knowledge across diverse fields, including atmospheric science, cancer biochemistry, and next-generation solar materials. Students pursuing careers in chemical sciences or related fields like biology, medicine, environmental science, education, business, and law often choose this major. Incoming students are advised to enroll in CHEM 11, an orientation seminar covering major requirements, department resources, and post-graduation opportunities.
A UCI chemistry degree unlocks diverse career paths, as chemical innovation drives modern civilization. Everyday essentials—from textiles and technology to fuel and food—rely on chemical advancements. Our program enhances student success through specialized academic tracks (detailed below) and ACS-certified degrees. Beyond comprehensive coursework spanning introductory to advanced topics, undergraduates often contribute to groundbreaking faculty research. The department's rigorous academic environment thoroughly prepares students for graduate studies, medical school, pharmacy programs, and other professional pursuits.
