Students enhance their Spanish language abilities in listening, reading, speaking, and writing while developing analytical skills, social awareness, and cross-cultural understanding applicable to diverse professional and academic paths. For those pursuing interdisciplinary studies, the Spanish B.A. program accommodates dual majors, especially beneficial for future educators in K-12 environments, including bilingual immersion programs. The curriculum consists of five required core courses and seven electives. Graduates of the Spanish major will achieve these fundamental competencies:
Students communicate ideas and express viewpoints in Spanish through both speech and writing, demonstrating mastery of grammar, tone, and stylistic elements.
Students examine and critique literary and cinematic works from Spanish-speaking creators, recognizing their historical and sociocultural significance.
Students recognize and explain linguistic characteristics (such as phonetics, syntax, and language acquisition) within Spanish-speaking communities, considering regional, social, and individual variations.
Students differentiate and articulate cultural traditions and diverse perspectives from Spanish-speaking regions (including Spain, Latin America, and U.S. Latino populations).
